Time/Action Management

Unfortunately we are unable to manage time and it is once you realise that the only thing you can manage is both others and your own actions. David Allan of GTD fame put it well when he said:

“You can’t manage time, it just is. So “time management” is a mislabeled problem, which has little chance of being an effective approach. What you really manage is your activity during time, and defining outcomes and physical actions required is the core process required to manage what you do

How do we use actions to manage our time (have a more productive time). There are several steps in this and without going into much detail I will aim to outline the most useful:

    • Have detailed goal for what you want to achieve
    • Prioritise actions on how close they bring you to the goal
    • Sequence and include any dependences (Location, other tasks and people)
    • Focus on the tasks that will get you closest to achieving the end goal.
    • Allow yourself time, do not get drawn in to other things
