Communication in Web Projects

Is web project management that different from other forms of project management in theory no, but the difference is that the average web project manager has no background and training as a conventional PM,  they have come from a design and communication background.

And this might be the reason that their are so many good Project Managers working within web projects, why? they have come from a background based on communication and understanding relationships over a delivery methodology.

Lets look at the risk that are more prominent  in a web project:

    • Continually changing scope
    • Design changes
    • Speed of market change
    • Competitor innovation

We have all suffered from these at one time or another but if you allow for them in your planing, because we all know that these changes will happen and we can clearly communicate the scope and amount of change that is allowed with out it either affecting time and cost.

The key to handling all of these problems is a flexible structure to project delivery (a flexible structure still has controls and rules it is by no means chaos a good example is SCRUM), but more important to the success of the project and the relationship is the ability to explain impacts and understand that some times changes are necessary.

If we are to begin to build a more open relationship with our customers, this has to begin at the veery start of he project and in many cases at the fact finding stage, It is at this point you will get a understanding of what the potential for change is based on the creative flair of the client or a lack of vision.

Understanding this allows the project manager to help to shape the vision or control the creativity of the client, Through understanding the vision of the project you can begin to put tools and fillers in to assessing any change request with the client and development team, The changes can be run through a filter to see how relevant and how much benefit they would add to the project.

Then a realistic approach to inevitable change management can be put in place. I will just close this with a amazing relevant quotation from e-consultancy web project management best practice white paper.

Instead, the key to running successful web projects appears to be nothing more that a collaborative and communicative culture, supported by structured practices and processes that are appropriate to the individual project and the organisation.
