Outsourced Software – Risk Management

The quality of outsourced software is often the largest block stopping company’s from using this as part of their long term development plan, or even for undertaking medium to small developments.

In reality the risks are the same as with any local software development it is just that some important communications procedures and documentation are missed or their importance not fully understood before the project is started.

The problems or misunderstandings that arise are more easily resolved with a local company but they can also be quickly resolved with an offshore company by developing good communications which is harder if the company are not physically close.

Key Actions to remove risk from the outset:

Develop a clear understanding of the end goal (Product Description)
Develop testing and quality criteria upfront.
Create Escalation and development procedures that are understood by all parties.
Clearly outline the tolerances.
