prince2 Prince2 2009Since its creation in 1996 Prince has been through 2 incremental changes with the last one being in 2005, these mostly consisted of corrections to the manual and some minor changes. The recent change now known as Prince2 2009 (I lost a bet in the hope it would be called Prince3) represents a major change in the system.

The new Prince2 will be launched on the 16th of June with the release of the new Manual the current information seems to state that the new 2009 version of Prince2 is simpler with a more lean approach to to project management , with the introduction of seven basic principals, the components have also be reduced to seven key themes. (from conversations I also believe there are other elements connected to the number seven).

So what about all our old Prince2 certificates?  They still stand to the renewal date and I think with a quick read of the two textbooks on the new 2009 version we could quickly get up to speed. When I sat Prince2 some time ago, the trainer discussed the changes that they were looking at in the new version and the majority were seen to be more streamlined and the new version was being brought into line with the other OGC systems/products such as MSP (Managing Successful Programmes).

From the available information I believe that the new version is a much better product, offering a more flexible and scalable project management framework, The ability to adapt the framework for smaller projects and the alignment with MSP is surely going to benefit the industry.

I will post more information as I get it but its worth having a look at http://www.ogc.gov.uk/methods_prince_2.asp and http://www.apmgroup.co.uk/PRINCE2/PRINCE2Home.asp.
