I am a heavy MS Project User and have been for some time, but I am currently working on a project where lots of the team members don’t have it. The are using Microsoft Excel for everything due to this I have spent sometime googling how to create a

Managing projects with Excel is a recipe for disaster, unless the project is very, very small (and then again). Excel is very weak when it comes to managing projects.
I have published a while ago an article on the ideal pm tool, the article lists a few requirements that Excel doesn’t meet.
Yes I agree that Excel is not the best software for running projects, although if it is standard within the clients company then you have to work with what you have got.
That said there are many development projects that are successfully being run on Google Docs, if task relationships are not that complicated it is possible to manage large projects this way you only need to look at agile software development.
