OpenUK

OpenUK is the UK’s unique industry body for open technology — spanning open source software, open hardware, open data, open standards, and AI openness. Founded to develop and sustain UK leadership in open technology while fostering global collaboration, it serves as the convening point for the UK’s business, academic, and contributing communities across the open technology landscape.

The organisation structures its work around three pillars: Community — creating a clear and resonant voice for open technology communities and practitioners across the UK; Legal and Policy — shaping the regulatory and policy environment so that the UK remains a great place to develop, fund, and deploy open technology; and Learning — building digital literacy and skills in open technology across young people and adults. In addition, OpenUK focuses on specific areas of contemporary importance: AI openness, skills development, public sector adoption of open technology, and sustainability.

OpenUK is perhaps best known for its State of Open survey and reporting programme — rigorous, annual research into the state of open source adoption, skills, and impact across the UK economy and public sector. The organisation also runs OpenKidsCamp, an animated educational

programme teaching digital skills and open source principles to young people, with freely available content used across the UK and beyond. The State of Open Con — held annually in London — brings together enterprise, public sector, government, academia, and open technology communities in the UK’s premier conference for open technology. In addition, OpenUK runs the OpenUK Awards, recognising outstanding contributions to open technology across the country, and maintains advisory boards focused on security and sustainability.

The organisation operates as a not-for-profit, governed by an elected Board of Directors and accountable to its membership and the wider open technology community.

My involvement

I serve as a Board Member of OpenUK, contributing to the governance and strategic direction of the organisation. This involvement reflects my broader commitment to open technology, open governance, and the principle that the tools and systems we build should be transparent, collaborative, and accessible to all.
